When God Removes Your Safety Net: Could It Be an Invitation to Trust Him More?
Updated: Sep 7
"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." — Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
Have You Ever Felt Like God Pulled the Rug Out From Under You?
There are seasons in life that don't make sense.
You pray.
You obey.
You work hard.
You build the career.
You earn the degree.
You provide for your family.
Then, unexpectedly, everything changes.
Maybe it was a job.
Maybe it was a relationship.
Maybe it was your health.
Maybe it was the future you thought you had planned.
The question isn't always, "Why did this happen?"
Sometimes the better question is:
"What is God trying to teach me now that He has my attention?"
When Success Quietly Becomes Security
Not everything we depend on is sinful.
Sometimes it's something good.
A career.
A paycheck.
A title.
A routine.
A dream we worked incredibly hard to achieve.
Those things can become subtle replacements for our dependence on God not because we intended them to, but because they slowly became the place we found our confidence.
That's one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn.
What If God Isn't Punishing You?
One of the biggest shifts in my perspective came when I stopped asking, "Why is God taking this away?"
and started asking,
"What is He preparing me for?"
Throughout Scripture, God often prepared people before He promoted them.
Before there was promise, there was pruning.
Before there was purpose, there was surrender.
Sometimes obedience requires walking forward without knowing where the next step leads.
Obedience Doesn't Always Come With a Safety Net
Faith isn't simply believing God exists. Faith is trusting His character when your circumstances don't make sense. It's choosing obedience when there's no guarantee of comfort. It's believing that if God closed one door, He isn't absent, He's still leading.
That doesn't make the process easy. But it does make it meaningful.
Purposeful Reflection
Take a few moments to sit with these questions:
What have I been leaning on more than God?
Have I confused God's blessings with God's presence?
If the thing that makes me feel secure disappeared tomorrow, where would my hope be anchored?
Is God inviting me into deeper trust instead of greater control?
Write your answers. Pray over them. Be honest with God.
He already knows.

This blog is only part of the story.
In Episode 1 of my new YouTube series, Obedience Without a Safety Net, I share my personal journey of building a career I genuinely loved, walking through grief, motherhood, unexpected change, and how God revealed that my greatest source of security had quietly become something other than Him.
This isn't a story about losing a job. It's a story about rediscovering where true security comes from.

Closing Prayer
Father,
Teach us to trust You more than we trust what You've given us. When life changes unexpectedly, remind us that Your character never changes. Help us seek Your Kingdom before we seek comfort, certainty, or control. Give us the courage to obey, even when we cannot see the outcome, knowing that You are faithful to guide every step.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
